Chinese film and television culture under the Belt and Road Initiative

The Belt and Road is a transcontinental long-term policy and investment program which aims at infrastructure development and acceleration of the economic integration of countries along the route of the historic Silk Road. Cultural exchange is an important goal of The Belt and Road and cinema is a medium for such exchange. In the process of the continuous deepening of The Belt and Road, the dissemination of film and television culture has also benefited a lot.

The implementation of The Belt and Road has created an active, open, inclusive, and innovative cultural environment for the dissemination of film and television culture. A variety of film and television cultural theories, works, and experiences can be communicated with each other in the process of the development of The Belt and Road which have added richer content and forms to the dissemination of film and television culture. Therefore, it effectively speeds up the dissemination efficiency of ‘going out’ and ‘bringing in’, so that the dissemination of film and television culture can better adapt to the trend of international development. For example, the movie--The Composer-- is based on the famous Chinese musician Xinghai Xian’s experience in Almaty. It is co-produced by China and Kazakhstan, which is one of the 20 partners along The Belt and Road. Because of the integration of Western culture, China’s excellent film and television works have emerged one after another.

The creation and dissemination of China’s film and television culture started late. In order to further strengthen the influence of China’s film and television culture communication, The Belt and Road have expanded the product and service market of China’s film and television culture communication. It is hoped that China’s excellent film and television cultural works can enter overseas markets in the development process of The Belt and Road, and be recognized and loved by larger markets and audiences. Wolf Warrior 2 became the seventh-grossing film in the world in 2017. The film tells the story of Chinese soldiers defending China’s national interests in Africa. People’s Daily of China commented on Wolf Warrior 2, “The ‘superhero’ created has become the symbol of the Chinese-style ‘superhero’ in the context of the current ‘rise of the great powers”. The success of Wolf Warrior 2 not only means that the commercial benefits brought by the dissemination of film and television culture have been greatly improved, but it also helps to establish a positive national cultural image to reverse international prejudices and differences and enhance Chinese cultural self-confidence.

The Belt and Road bring not only quantitative changes but also qualitative changes to the dissemination of film and television culture. However,China cannot rely on the existing achievements. Chinese should take a correct view of the highlights and shortcomings in the dissemination of Chinese film and television culture; actively optimize the social environment for the development of the dissemination of film and television culture, and realize the long-term and healthy development of the dissemination of film and television culture.
